That was approximately five years ago. The point of the withdrawal was to contribute to the realization of the Palestinian state.
What happened then?
If the reports of international media agencies are accurate Israel experienced a barrage of suicide bombers and rocket attacks. All emanating from the seceded territory. The much desired Palestinian state is as far as I am aware of has not been strongly established. What we have in Palestine, especially since the demise of Arafat is a crisis in leadership and the so called terrorist groups are lording over most of its territories.
The probable reason why Israel engaged in the current acts of violence is mainly to recover Gaza and reestablish their settlements.
Why?
Probably because they need a buffer zone from the recent rocket attacks. One of the ideas stressed by the Israli Foreign Minister is the distance of Gaza from Tel Aviv, the capital of the country.
Israel is located right smack at the middle of other countries who do not deem it to their best interest that Israel exists. This is the reason why historically Israel's territory is often threatened by neighboring countries. This is the reason why Golda Meir is one of the most admired women leaders - because she successfully navigated the tumutous tide between conflict and peace. This is the reason why Israel maintains a modern cache of weapons, a higly trained military and an efficient conscription program. This is the reason that in very recent hitory Israel engaged in fighting with the Hezbollah of Lebanon.
Beyond creating a buffer zone, Israel needs to establish that it is a force to reckon with. Otherwise the frequency of the attacks will increase. Ihe continuous bombing will continue to affect the lives of Israelis and the government probably had enough.
Is the attack justified?
Even the charter of the United Nations allows for the use of force in instances of agression. The rocket attacks are a clear case of aggression.
But do I approve of the violence?
Gandhi probably has the best answer to that - An eye for an eye only makes the world go blind.
